Chinese Ming Dynasty Furniture Study

Image
I really like Chinese Antique Furniture, especially the Ming Dynasty style. So I chose a Ming Dynasty long decorative desk for my reversed-engineered object study.  This is the desk I found in a furniture book. The size of this desk is  240cm (l) * 45cm(w) * 88cm(h) It has 19 parts.  Desktop: 4 sidebars, one center top board, 2 long decorative bars, front and back.  Desk legs: 2 side stands (each stand includes one decorative panel, one top connecting bar, 2 supportive side stands, one small bottom connecting bar, and one large bottom connecting bar) The magic feature of this kind of desk is that it can be connected without glue or nails. The whole desk structure relies on several mortise and tenon joints. I found some joint models in the same book that might be applied to this desk. This model can help to understand how the sidebars connected to the centre board This model can help to understand how 2 small boards are connected to a large centre board. ...

Laser Cutting Work

This week, we got to cut our surface design with wood in the laser cutter.  It's so cool to see my design become a real object.

Surface Design

I am always interested in the surface pattern design. Here are some photos from my inspiration hunt. I like the circular shape and I found I was particularly attracted by patterns with mysterious contents. So I decided to have my design theme as Cyberpunk. I hope it will be combined with the ancient mysterious concept and futuristic robots, so I made a manta ray robot flying over an ancient Chinese lotus flower style totem.  I want to make it as a print for bags or T-shirts.  I am still struggling with the setup of Blogger, and can't figure out how to upload clear large images. Before I find out how to fix the resolution problem, please pardon my blurry images. Thank you.  P.S.: The 2D surface pattern design is done by Rhino. It's way more difficult to draw with Rhino than to draw with Illustrator. Anyways, the good news is that I am now a master of "interpCrv", "circle", "offset", "arrayCrv", "hatch" etc. Lol

Mushroom Castle for the CAD Class Assignment

Image
This week's assignment is to make a castle with Rhino. I decided to create a game about one button mushrooms searching for colours. This castle can fit in as part of the scene. The story of the game is very simple. One little button mushroom starts her journey to search for her colourful companions. I did some research about mushrooms, and I especially like the golden jungle mushrooms. They are groups of little mushrooms growing on the tree buck.   So I want to design the castle arrangement like the mushroom community. The buildings are similar to the mushroom shape but in a more straight and tidy fashion. The tiny thin stem-like towers work as the stairs to climb up to the caps. The caps have several windows on them to indicate the little mushrooms living inside.  Buildings are placed randomly but close together. Here is my original design concept drawing.      These are images of my 3D design from different angles.   I haven't figured out how ...
